Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are the positions only 12 months in duration?
Due to limitations of ongoing grant awards, contracts at AMI can only be guaranteed for the next 12 months. If the position is continued beyond this 12 month period, the incumbent will be required to reapply for the available position and be appointed through the formal University of Cape Town recruitment process.

Are the Microscopy Specialist and Image Analyst positions post-doctoral fellowships?
No. These positions do not enable independent research avenues. As a result, the performance areas and outputs of these positions are distinct from those of a post-doctoral research fellow.

Will there be opportunity to be trained in the position requirements?
Due to the short nature of these employment contracts, eligible candidates will be required to demonstrate prior experience in the subject matter and techniques for the respective position. As part of on-boarding for the position, training will be conducted to familiarise the incumbent on techniques and theory specific to instrumentation, protocols, and processes carried out within the AMI Imaging Centre.

Am I eligible to apply if I am still a post-graduate student?
Applicants must possess the necessary degree certificates (or letter confirming completion of their degree ahead of graduation) before the commencement of the position.

What does the informal, remote/online interview consist of?
Suitable candidates will be contacted by the AMI Manager and invited to an interview on MS Teams. During this interview, AMI team members will learn more about the applicant and the applicant will have an opportunity to learn more about the position and the AMI Imaging Centre. During the interview, the applicant will be asked to present information on their prior experience in the position-specific subject matter and techniques for 3-5 minutes. More information on the interview will be shared with suitable candidates. The interview will be used together with the applicant's cover letter and curriculum vitae (including correspondence with referees) to determine suitability for appointment. Thereafter, a decision will be communicated with successful applicants.

When is the starting date of the positions?
Acknowledging the appointment process can take time, the AMI Imaging Centre expects the three above positions to commence on either 1 September 2025 or 1 October 2025. Limited negotiation is possible.

When will successful applicants be informed of their selection?
The AMI Manager will endeavour to inform successful candidates as early as possible. Thereafter, appointment information, requirements, and documentation will be shared and communicated.
